US–Iran to Resume Key Talks in Islamabad Amid West Asia Tensions

The United States and Iran are preparing to resume high-level diplomatic talks aimed at de-escalating tensions in West Asia and addressing concerns over regional instability and global economic disruption. According to reports by international media, including *The Wall Street Journal*, the second round of negotiations is likely to be held next week in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The renewed engagement comes amid escalating military confrontations between the two countries and rising tensions in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route. Pakistan is reportedly acting as a key mediator in facilitating indirect dialogue between Washington and Tehran. The initial round of talks, held in Islamabad on April 11 between US Vice President JD Vance and Iranian representatives, concluded without any agreement, leading to the postponement of further discussions until now. A temporary ceasefire that came into effect on April 8 was later extended without a fixed deadline by former US President Donald Trump.

Ahead of the upcoming meeting, sources indicate that a preliminary 14-point draft framework has been prepared for discussion. The proposed plan reportedly includes relocating Iran’s highly enriched uranium stockpile to a third country, enforcing strict restrictions to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons capability, and restoring stability in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure uninterrupted oil transportation. It also proposes partial easing of US economic sanctions and the release of frozen Iranian assets, subject to compliance with nuclear limitations, along with broader efforts to de-escalate conflicts in other regional hotspots, including Lebanon.

However, diplomatic observers caution that significant differences remain between the two sides, making a breakthrough uncertain. Iran is reportedly seeking a short 30-day timeline to conclude the peace process, while the United States has proposed extending the ceasefire for up to two months. Tehran has also demanded financial compensation for damages incurred during recent hostilities. Former President Donald Trump has expressed reservations over Iran’s conditions, stating that sanctions relief would not be considered without addressing what he described as long-standing geopolitical concerns.

The outcome of the Islamabad talks is being closely monitored globally, as any agreement could have significant implications for international oil markets and regional security. A successful consensus on the proposed framework is being viewed as a potential diplomatic milestone that could help stabilize West Asia and ease global economic pressure.
