Political uncertainty continues to grip Tamil Nadu as fast-evolving equations in the post-election scenario appear to have put a brake on actor-turned-politician Vijay-led Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as a key player in the Assembly polls. Although the Indian National Congress has extended support to TVK for government formation, the party is still short of the required majority, keeping the power race wide open in the state.
Amid this backdrop, reports have surfaced indicating possible political realignment between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). According to media reports, discussions are reportedly underway between the two rival Dravidian parties, triggering intense speculation in political circles over an unprecedented alliance in Tamil Nadu politics.
Electoral arithmetic shows DMK has secured 59 seats while AIADMK has won 47 seats, taking their combined strength to 106 in the 234-member Assembly. Even if the alliance materialises, it would still fall short of the majority mark of 118 and would require support from at least 12 additional MLAs. Political observers believe both parties may attempt to rope in smaller outfits such as Left parties, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), PMK and VCK to bridge the gap.
Meanwhile, TVK, which won 108 seats, remains in a delicate position despite external support from five Congress MLAs. With Vijay having won from two constituencies, one seat is expected to be vacated, effectively taking TVK’s working strength to 112. However, the party still needs backing from at least six more MLAs, with Left parties and IUML reportedly ruling out support, while VCK is yet to take a final call, adding to the uncertainty around TVK’s claim.
With multiple permutations and combinations in play, Tamil Nadu’s political landscape is witnessing heightened suspense over the next government formation. While speculation continues over a possible DMK-AIADMK alignment, there are also reports of AIADMK showing interest in engaging with TVK. As negotiations and political positioning intensify, the final outcome remains uncertain, keeping the state’s power equation in a fluid and closely watched phase.
