The Indian Air Force is reportedly moving towards a major upgrade of its combat capabilities, with plans to procure the advanced fifth-generation stealth fighter jet Sukhoi-57 (Su-57) from Russia. While there has been no official confirmation from the government, defence sources indicate that the deal is being actively explored as part of India’s long-term air power strategy.

According to reports, countries such as Algeria and Iran have also shown interest in the aircraft, with India among the nations evaluating or placing orders for the platform. The potential acquisition is being seen as a significant step to bridge the operational gap until India’s indigenous fifth-generation fighter programme becomes fully operational.

India’s indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) project is expected to take shape only by 2040. In the meantime, China’s deployment of its J-20 stealth fighter jets has created a capability gap in the region, prompting India to seek an interim solution to maintain strategic balance.

To address this challenge, India is reportedly planning to initially acquire around 40 ready-made Su-57 aircraft directly from Russia. This would be followed by discussions on a possible manufacturing arrangement in India, under a transfer of technology framework aimed at strengthening domestic defence production.

The Su-57 is regarded as one of the most advanced fifth-generation fighter jets, featuring stealth design that reduces radar visibility and enhances survivability in hostile environments. It is powered by the AL-51F-1 engine, offering high speed and agility, and is considered competitive with other global stealth platforms in its class.

The aircraft also comes equipped with advanced thrust vectoring technology, multi-directional radar coverage, and artificial intelligence-assisted combat systems. If the deal is finalised, it is expected to significantly enhance India’s air combat capability and support the country’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative through potential technology transfer and integration of indigenous weapons systems.
