The NASA has launched the Artemis II mission, marking a major milestone in its renewed efforts toward human exploration of the Moon. Four astronauts have embarked on a 10-day journey around the lunar orbit, a critical step in NASA’s long-term plans for sustained lunar presence and future deep space missions, including Mars exploration.
The mission lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center aboard the Space Launch System (SLS), a 32-story rocket designed for deep space travel. The successful launch drew large crowds of space enthusiasts across Florida and nearby regions, who witnessed the historic moment. NASA had also released visibility maps in advance, enabling people in parts of Florida and southern Georgia to view the launch.
The primary objective of Artemis II is to test the Orion spacecraft and its critical systems. The crew comprises three American astronauts—Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Reid Wiseman—along with Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen. During the mission, they will assess navigation, life-support, communication, and control systems. NASA has confirmed that the mission will not include a lunar landing, as it is focused on testing ahead of future crewed landings.
A key component of the spacecraft is the European Service Module, developed by Airbus. The module provides propulsion, power, thermal control, water, and oxygen, and is equipped with 33 engines, including a reused Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering Engine. The crew is expected to travel approximately 252,000 miles (406,000 km) from Earth, making it one of the farthest human spaceflights. NASA plans to undertake a crewed landing near the Moon’s south pole by 2028 and aims to launch Mars missions in the 2030s or 2040s, with Artemis II serving as a crucial stepping stone.
