The central government has initiated a free Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination drive to prevent cervical cancer, a disease affecting a significant number of women in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the initiative on Saturday during an event in Ajmer, Rajasthan. The drive aims to provide protection to millions of girls across the country against the virus responsible for most cervical cancer cases.
Eligibility and Distribution
The vaccine is targeted at girls aged 14 to under 15. It will be administered through schools and government health centers across India. A single dose of Gardasil-4 will be given in the left arm, with marker ink applied to the left index finger for identification. Registration can be completed via the U-WIN portal, or eligible girls can receive the vaccine directly at designated centers.
Vaccination Guidelines
The three-month drive requires that recipients eat before vaccination, as the vaccine should not be administered on an empty stomach. Girls will be observed for 30 minutes after the dose. Mild side effects, such as fever or headache, are common and not a cause for concern. Parental consent is mandatory, and vaccination remains voluntary. Girls with pre-existing health conditions or allergies will not be administered the vaccine.
Significance of HPV Vaccine
Cervical cancer is primarily caused by HPV, and vaccination before exposure to the virus can prevent over 90% of cases. India accounts for a substantial share of cervical cancer cases worldwide, with thousands of women succumbing to the disease annually. By providing Gardasil-4 free of charge, the government hopes to drastically reduce the burden, while the vaccine costs around ₹5,000 in private hospitals.
