Islamabad: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s health condition has reportedly worsened, with his party Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) warning that he could permanently lose vision in his right eye unless urgent medical intervention is provided.
According to PTI leaders and local media reports, Khan is suffering from retinal vein blockage, restricting blood flow to the eye and increasing the risk of retinal damage. The party has demanded that he be shifted immediately to a private hospital, stating that adequate surgical facilities are unavailable inside jail. Prison authorities, however, maintain that treatment will be provided within the prison.
PTI alleged that despite medical examinations conducted in October 2024, jail officials have since denied Khan access to his personal doctors, even after directions from the Islamabad High Court. Party leaders accused the government of delaying treatment for political reasons.
Khan’s sisters, Aleema Khan and Noreen Khanum, staged protests outside Adiala Jail, demanding transparency and immediate medical care. PTI leaders have also moved the Islamabad High Court seeking permission to meet Khan. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said meeting a prisoner is a legal right and expressed concern over the health of both Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi, whose interim bail has been extended until February 6.
Meanwhile, Pakistan Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Khan was taken under heavy security to a hospital in Islamabad, where a brief medical procedure was performed. He added that Khan’s condition is currently stable.
PTI supporters, however, allege a conspiracy behind delays in treatment and claim Khan is being subjected to prolonged isolation. They have renewed demands for his immediate release, warning that continued denial of proper medical care could have serious consequences.
