With New Year celebrations approaching, Hyderabad Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar has issued a stern warning to motorists against driving under the influence of alcohol. He cautioned that anyone violating the law on the night of December 31 in the name of celebrations will face strict legal action, urging citizens to ensure festivities do not end in tragedy. His messages, shared through social media, have gained wide attention.

The Commissioner announced that large-scale drunk-and-drive checks will be carried out across Hyderabad on December 31 night. Using a firm yet relatable tone, Sajjanar advised partygoers to avoid taking the wheel after consuming alcohol, stating that it is safer to book a cab than to face legal consequences. He stressed that driving in an inebriated condition could lead to arrest and court proceedings.

Addressing attempts by some offenders to use influence during police checks, Sajjanar made it clear that such behaviour will not be tolerated. He said excuses such as “Do you know who my father is?” will no longer work, reiterating that all citizens are equal before the law and any claims can only be made before a court.

Police warned that drunk driving will attract severe penalties, including fines of up to ₹10,000, imprisonment of up to six months, seizure of vehicles, and recommendations for permanent cancellation of driving licences in serious cases. Special enforcement drives will be conducted at over 100 locations across the city, with around seven additional platoons deployed. The Commissioner appealed to the public, especially the youth, to act responsibly and usher in the New Year safely.
