US Warns of Tourist Visa Rejections Linked to Birth Tourism

The Trump administration, which continues to tighten U.S. immigration rules, has introduced stricter scrutiny in the issuance of tourist visas. The U.S. Embassy in India has cautioned that visa applications will be rejected if officials believe the primary purpose of travel is to obtain American citizenship for an unborn child. The embassy issued an alert on social media outlining the updated stance.

In its statement, the embassy said that if consular officers determine that securing U.S. citizenship for a baby yet to be born is the applicant’s main intent, such tourist visa requests will not be approved. The move aims to curb “birth tourism,” a practice where pregnant women travel to the United States specifically so their children can acquire birthright citizenship.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is also weighing additional measures to tighten screening processes, including a proposal that would require certain visa applicants to submit their full social media history during the application stage. These steps reflect a broader push to toughen U.S. immigration controls.
