Putin’s Family Draws Attention Ahead of India Visit

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit India on Thursday, marking his first trip to the country in four years. He is expected to land in New Delhi in the evening and will participate in the India–Russia Annual Summit alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Several key bilateral agreements are expected to be signed during the summit, strengthening the strategic ties between the two nations.

Amid the visit, there is growing public interest in Putin’s personal and family life, which he has largely kept out of the public eye. Putin married Lyudmila Alexandrovna Shkrebneva in 1983, a Philology graduate from Leningrad University and a German language teacher. The couple divorced in 2014 for personal reasons.

Putin and Lyudmila have two daughters: Maria Putina, 40, a medical researcher who has two children, and Katerina Tikhonova, 39, a scientist and former acrobatic dancer. Both daughters are fluent in English, German, and French. Putin has openly declared himself a grandfather since 2017 and has emphasized family values through initiatives in Russia, including declaring 2024 as the “Year of the Family” to boost birth rates and provide support to families.

Additionally, a close relative, Anna Tsivileva, was appointed head of the “Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation” in 2023 and later became Deputy Defence Minister in 2024. Speculations persist about three possible children born to Putin outside his marriage, although no official confirmation has been provided.
