A major tragedy struck the Central African nation of Congo after a bridge collapse at a copper mining site claimed at least 32 lives, with officials warning that the toll may rise to nearly 70. The incident occurred at the Kalando mining area in Lualaba Province, where hundreds of workers are employed. According to initial reports, the collapse happened after the sound of gunfire triggered panic among miners, causing a sudden rush on a narrow bridge, which subsequently gave way. Rescue operations are underway, and authorities are working to trace the missing workers.

Mining is one of Congo’s most crucial economic sectors, providing employment to nearly two million people. However, concerns have been repeatedly raised regarding inadequate safety measures in several mining zones. Despite the high dependency on the sector for livelihoods, a lack of proper infrastructure and emergency protocols continues to put workers’ lives at risk. Officials have stated that a detailed investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the collapse and prevent such incidents in the future.
