U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for $5 billion, claiming that the broadcaster misrepresented his speech during the January 6, 2021, Capitol Hill attack. Trump’s legal team has already demanded billions in damages, alleging that the documentary aired by the BBC distorted his words, harming his reputation. Although the BBC issued apologies, it refused to pay the compensation Trump demanded. He stated that the lawsuit, ranging from $1 billion to $5 billion, would be filed in court next week and added that he intends to discuss the matter with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The controversy stems from the aftermath of the 2020 U.S. presidential election, which Trump lost. Following the election, his supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, during which Trump delivered a speech for approximately an hour. Trump alleged that the BBC edited his speech misleadingly in a documentary, prompting widespread criticism.
