Kolkata, West Bengal: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has spoken out following the sexual assault of a female student at a private medical college. She emphasized that girls should not be allowed to go out at night and stressed that the safety of female students is primarily the responsibility of private institutions. The Chief Minister also urged that it is unfair to involve the government in such incidents and that girls should take precautions to protect themselves.

In a related incident in West Bengal, another medical student from Odisha, studying at Shobha Pur College, was sexually assaulted. Police reports state that the victim went out with a friend on Friday night, was followed by several individuals, threatened, and taken to a forested area where the assault occurred. The perpetrators warned her against revealing the incident to anyone.

The victim was discovered in the forest by locals with severe injuries and was immediately taken to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment in the ICU. Upon learning of the assault, her parents traveled to Durgapur and lodged a formal complaint with the police.

Durgapur police have arrested the victim’s friend along with three other suspects. Authorities stated that the friend also participated in the assault, lured the victim to an isolated location, and confiscated her phone and money. Police are continuing investigations, recording statements, and have assured that the accused will face strict punishment under the law.
