New York: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has publicly lauded U.S. President Donald Trump for his role in facilitating the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, describing him as deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Sharif dedicated much of his 25-minute address to praising Trump, repeatedly highlighting his diplomatic efforts and influence in resolving hostilities.
Sharif emphasized that Pakistan agreed to the ceasefire primarily due to Trump’s active intervention and expressed gratitude to him and his team, stating that without their involvement, the resolution may not have been possible. He also acknowledged diplomatic support from countries including China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Azerbaijan, Iran, the UAE, and the UN Secretary-General during periods of heightened tension with India.
Earlier, Sharif and Pakistan Army Chief General Munir held a private, hour-long meeting with Trump at the White House, attended by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, sources indicate the talks were focused on strengthening Pakistan-U.S. relations, particularly amid strained India-U.S. ties over Russian oil imports. Observers note that Pakistan is aiming to leverage closer U.S. relations to advance its strategic interests in South Asia.
This engagement underscores Pakistan’s efforts to enhance diplomatic channels with the U.S. and highlights Trump’s continued influence in regional geopolitics, especially concerning India-Pakistan relations.
