Trump Claims Tariffs Necessary to Pressure Russia

United States President Donald Trump has defended the imposition of tariffs on India, stating they were introduced due to the country’s continued purchase of oil from Russia. He described the decision as tough but necessary to exert pressure on Russia, adding that he was prepared to face disagreements with India over the issue. Trump emphasized that India is among the largest consumers of Russian oil, which compelled him to act. He also claimed that during his presidency, he made several such difficult decisions and even averted seven wars, including a potential conflict between India and Pakistan.

Trump is reportedly pushing G7 nations to impose steep tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% on India and China to curb their oil imports from Russia. According to Financial Times, his team plans to discuss this proposal in a virtual meeting with G7 finance ministers, arguing that the move is essential to cut funding to Moscow amid the Russia-Ukraine War. A United States Department of the Treasury representative alleged that India and China are indirectly fueling the conflict and contributing to civilian casualties, suggesting that tariffs could be lifted once the war ends.

Trump has reportedly also urged the European Union to join the effort, proposing 100% tariffs on India and China until they cease importing Russian oil. A US official said Washington is ready to proceed if the EU participates, while EU officials have reportedly expressed willingness to cooperate in implementing the plan to intensify economic pressure on Russia.
