Hyderabad: The Telangana state cabinet, under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has approved the conduct of local body elections, with plans to hold them in September. The decision has been formally communicated to the State Election Commission.

In a significant move, the cabinet also decided to remove the cap on reservations. The previous government’s ordinance limiting reservations will be replaced with a special bill in the current Assembly. Following the Assembly session, a special government order is expected to implement 42% reservation for BCs in the state, based on the recent caste census. This comes ahead of the High Court’s directive to complete local body elections by the end of September.

The earlier 2018 ordinance had capped reservations at 50%, but the Revanth government has now removed this limit and sent the ordinance to the Governor. Meanwhile, the bill for 42% reservation for BCs is pending with the President. With no response from the Centre, the state government is considering implementing the reservation based on caste census data.
