Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name in the record books by scoring a century in his debut Test on English soil during the first Test against England at Headingley. The 23-year-old left-hander struck 101 runs off 129 balls, including 16 fours and a six, becoming the first Indian cricketer to achieve a century in his maiden Test in England.
With this performance, Jaiswal has joined an elite list of Indian batters who have scored centuries in their debut Test matches abroad. He is now part of two rare groups: those who scored a century in their debut Test in Australia (alongside M.L. Jaisimha and Sunil Gavaskar) and those who achieved the same feat in England (Vijay Manjrekar, Abbas Ali Baig, Sandeep Patil, Sourav Ganguly, Murali Vijay, and Jaiswal).
During his innings, Jaiswal formed two vital partnerships — a 91-run stand with KL Rahul for the first wicket and a 129-run stand for the fourth wicket with captain Shubman Gill. He was eventually dismissed by England skipper Ben Stokes shortly after the tea break. His century adds to the list of Indian debut tons in England, including Ganguly (131, Lord’s 1996), Manjrekar (133, Leeds 1952), and Vijay (146, Nottingham 2014).
