New Delhi: The Government of India on Saturday imposed port restrictions on select imports from Bangladesh, limiting the entry of goods such as ready-made garments and processed food items to only two major ports—Kolkata and Mumbai. The move was announced through an official notification issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
According to the notification, these port restrictions will not apply to goods transiting through India to Nepal and Bhutan. Additionally, essential imports from Bangladesh such as fish, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), edible oils, and crushed stone are exempt from the directive.

While no official reason was cited, diplomatic sources suggest that the decision follows a deterioration in bilateral relations after Bangladesh’s interim government reportedly adopted a position perceived as supportive of Pakistan during the recent India–Pakistan conflict.
The situation further escalated after Bangladesh’s interim leader Mohammad Yunus made controversial remarks concerning India’s northeastern states during a recent visit to China. The Ministry of External Affairs has yet to issue a formal statement, but the move is being seen as a calibrated response to the growing strain in Indo-Bangladesh ties.
