Dhaka: Legal troubles continue to plague former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently residing in India. The Bangladeshi government, under the leadership of the current administration, has escalated its efforts to bring Hasina back to the country by issuing arrest warrants for her and 12 other former ministers and officials, including her brother Yunus Hasina, who previously served as the chief advisor to the government.
Hasina has been residing in India since August of the previous year, reportedly under the protection of the Indian government. In an effort to secure her return, the Bangladesh government has approached Interpol, requesting the issuance of Red Corner Notices for Hasina and the others. The Red Corner Notice would enable their arrest in any country where they are found.
This development follows recent actions against Hasina’s family, with arrest warrants issued for her son, Sajib Wazed, in relation to two cases involving land allocation fraud in the Dhaka suburbs. Additionally, 16 other individuals have had arrest warrants issued against them by the Senior Special Judge of Dhaka Metropolitan Court. All of the accused are currently at large, with the court ordering police to report their status by April 29.
The Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation in December into the alleged illegal allocation of 1.86 acres of land in the diplomatic district of Dhaka’s Newtown to Hasina and her relatives. The allegations suggest that they engaged in corrupt practices to secure the land. The investigation is ongoing, as authorities seek to hold Hasina and others accountable for their actions.
