Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab): Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal on Sunday ended his indefinite hunger strike after 131 days, a protest he launched demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops. The decision came after repeated appeals from farmer unions and leaders urging him to lead the broader farmers’ movement in Punjab.

Dallewal began his fast on November 26 last year to press the central government for legislative action on MSP. As his health continued to deteriorate, concerns grew among farmer groups. In response, a Kisan Mahapanchayat was held in Sirhind, Fatehgarh Sahib district, where farmers unanimously urged him to withdraw the fast.

Returning home from the hospital on Saturday, Dallewal officially ended his hunger strike on Sunday, honouring the appeals from fellow farmers.

Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu also appealed to Dallewal to end his fast. Bittu assured that the Centre would hold talks with representatives of farmer unions on May 4 to address their demands.

Farmer unions hailed Dallewal’s decision as a strategic step forward, stating that the fight for a legal MSP guarantee would continue with greater vigour in the coming days.
