The West Asia region is once again reverberating with the flames of war. The conflict between the United States and Iran has intensified dramatically, reaching a critical peak. After Iran launched missile strikes on key American military bases and command centers in Jordan, the US military retaliated with extremely powerful air and missile strikes on southern Iran. Tehran is said to be in a state of severe shock over these unexpected developments.
The American counterattack has caused heavy damage to strategic locations across Iran. US forces struck Qeshm Island in southern Iran, along with the coastal city of Bushehr, home to Iran’s crucial nuclear power plant. Iranian local media reported that missiles also struck residential areas on Qeshm Island, causing significant damage.
Earlier, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that it had fired ballistic missiles at a US airbase in Jordan. The IRGC warned that retaliatory action from its side would continue as long as threats and intimidation from the United States persisted. However, US Central Command stated that it had successfully intercepted the ballistic missiles fired by Iran, and in response, had rained bombs on dozens of strategic targets across Iran.
Meanwhile, this war, which began on February 28, has gradually spread to other regions. What was initially confined to Iran and the Gulf countries has now reached Damietta Port in Egypt. There, a drone attack occurred at a US-owned floating LNG storage facility while it was loading liquefied natural gas. The attack triggered massive fires that spread to a nearby Greek gas tanker as well.
Emergency response teams safely evacuated sailors from the blaze that broke out at Damietta Port. Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum confirmed that although two natural gas tankers were severely damaged in the incident, there were no casualties. While official confirmation of Iranian involvement in the attack is yet to come, the incident has sparked serious international concern over energy security.
Immediately after the attack on US energy infrastructure in Egypt, US President Donald Trump reacted with intense anger. Speaking in a phone interview with Fox News, he issued strong warnings, saying, “Now it’s our turn. We will hit Iran in the most devastating way. We will teach our enemies a hard lesson.” He also remarked that Iran would face irreversible consequences and that the country would be completely destroyed.
Peace efforts have been reduced to mere temporary pauses, dashing hopes for diplomatic talks. While a degree of calm had been achieved earlier following agreements reached after 10 days of intense strikes, the latest series of attacks has brought the situation back to square one. The harsh rhetoric from leaders and ongoing military actions are causing serious international concern.
These wartime developments threaten to push the world into a severe energy crisis. With war-like conditions prevailing in the Gulf and Red Sea regions — key hubs for oil production and transportation — international crude oil and gas prices could skyrocket. Economic analysts warn that if the conflict expands further, the global economy will suffer severe damage.
