Washington/Florida: The US military has deployed surface-to-air missile defense systems around President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, hours after a plane crashed a few kilometers from the property, triggering wide discussion internationally.
Military teams have positioned Avenger air defense systems on the Mar-a-Lago grounds as well as along nearby roads and footpaths. Equipped with Stinger missiles and counter-drone equipment, the systems are capable of detecting and neutralizing low-flying aircraft, helicopters and small drones. Additional security arrangements have also been made around the nearby Donald J. Trump International Airport.
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and US Army Northern Command, together with the White House, have officially confirmed the deployment. Defense analysts describe the placement of air defense missiles at a president’s private residence on this scale as a rare development. They say the Pentagon may have acted at the request of the US Secret Service and that intelligence agencies could hold specific threat information, though there has been no official confirmation.
Responding to the arrangements, the Secret Service said they form part of its routine security duties and declined to disclose details of any specific threat for security reasons. Known as the “Winter White House,” Mar-a-Lago serves as Trump’s residence and as a key venue for meetings with foreign leaders, and security there has reportedly been raised to the highest level.
Investigating agencies are examining whether any link exists between the plane crash and the deployment. No official confirmation has been issued on the matter.
