According to early Tamil Nadu Assembly election counting trends, the ruling DMK alliance appears to be heading towards a setback, with analysts pointing to a combination of ten key factors that have influenced the party’s performance. The trends suggest that despite expectations, the DMK has struggled to maintain its earlier dominance in the state.
The first major factor is the rise of actor Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has emerged as a strong alternative, drawing youth and neutral voters away from traditional Dravidian parties. Second, the shift to a triangular contest between DMK, AIADMK, and TVK led to vote splitting, weakening the ruling party’s consolidated support base. Third, a significant portion of young and first-time voters reportedly leaned towards new leadership, further impacting DMK’s vote share.
Fourth, anti-incumbency after five years of governance has played a crucial role, with public expectations from the “Dravidian Model 2.0” not fully met at the ground level. Fifth, perceptions of dynastic politics following Udhayanidhi Stalin’s elevation as Deputy Chief Minister created dissatisfaction among certain voter sections. Sixth, delays in key infrastructure projects, especially in Chennai, added to urban voter frustration.
Seventh, failure to fully implement major manifesto promises such as the Old Pension Scheme restoration and loan waivers affected government employees and students. Eighth, the unresolved NEET exemption promise led to disappointment among rural students. Ninth, concerns over law and order, including allegations of rising drug usage and crime, influenced voter sentiment, particularly among women.
Tenth, aggressive social media campaigns by opposition parties, highlighting controversial past statements of DMK leaders, along with perceptions of strained Centre–State relations and dissatisfaction with local representatives, further weakened the party’s image. These combined factors are now being seen as central to the DMK’s poor performance in the current trends.
