TVK chief Vijay, who recently assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has formally resigned from one of the two constituencies he won in the Assembly elections. Vijay had contested from Perambur and Tiruchy East and emerged victorious in both segments.

According to an official statement from the Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretariat, Vijay has resigned from the Tiruchy East constituency and will continue to serve as the MLA from Perambur. The decision has been recorded and made official by the Assembly authorities.

As per constitutional provisions, a candidate is allowed to contest from two constituencies in an election, but in the event of winning both, one seat must be vacated. Accordingly, Vijay retained Perambur and relinquished Tiruchy East. With this, he joins a select list of leaders who have secured victories from two constituencies in a single election.

In a broader political context, similar instances have been observed in the Telugu states. In the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections, Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan contested from Bhimavaram and Gajuwaka but lost both seats. In the 2023 Telangana Assembly elections, BRS chief K. Chandrashekar Rao and TPCC chief Revanth Reddy contested from two constituencies each but were defeated in Kamareddy, where BJP candidate Venkata Ramana Reddy won.

The resignation by Vijay from Tiruchy East has now been officially notified, confirming his continuation as the Perambur MLA in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
