South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has announced the imposition of Emergency Martial Law, citing growing political tensions and external threats. In a televised address on Tuesday, President Yoon accused opposition parties of suppressing the government and aligning with North Korea. This move comes amid a political crisis that has intensified since his administration began in May 2022.
President Yoon stated, “To protect South Korea from the imminent threat posed by North Korean communist forces and to eliminate anti-national elements, I am declaring Emergency Martial Law.” He emphasized that this action was necessary to safeguard the nation’s democratic framework, ensure national security, and protect citizens’ freedom.
The President also criticized the Democratic Party, which holds the majority in South Korea’s National Assembly, for using its position to undermine the government’s efforts. This announcement marks a significant escalation in the political turmoil faced by President Yoon since he assumed office.
