NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State L. Murugan resigned from the Union Council of Ministers on Tuesday, saying he wants to devote himself fully to strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu. He said his aim is to prepare the party for the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Murugan asked to be relieved of his ministerial responsibilities. He also sought permission to give up his Rajya Sabha membership so that he can work for the party full time.

Murugan wrote that he plans to travel through villages and streets across Tamil Nadu, meet people and speak with party workers. He said he wants to work at the grassroots level to expand the BJP’s presence in the state.

He said he wished to carry the Prime Minister’s message of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” to every household, and pledged to work to ensure every family has a stake in building a developed India.

Murugan was serving as Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs. He said he has decided to devote all his time and energy to growing the party in Tamil Nadu and preparing for the 2029 polls. The resignation assumes significance amid speculation that a reshuffle of the Union Cabinet is imminent.
