Washington: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently described his divorce from Melinda Gates as a “very painful” chapter in his life. In response, Melinda Gates has offered her perspective, stating that the decision to end their marriage was necessary due to circumstances that made it untenable to continue the relationship.
Speaking in an interview with an international news outlet, Melinda Gates said, “If the values required to sustain a relationship are not upheld, then divorce becomes necessary.” She acknowledged the emotional toll of the separation, calling it one of the most difficult phases of her life. “I was filled with fear and anxiety at the time,” she said, but added that her life has since moved in a more joyful direction.

The couple officially divorced in 2021, bringing an end to a nearly three-decade-long marriage. They have three children, all over the age of 20.
Bill Gates made his comments during an interview promoting his latest book, *Source Code*, where he reflected on various personal and professional experiences, including the divorce.
While the exact reasons for the separation were never officially disclosed, a leading publication had earlier reported that Melinda Gates was unhappy with Bill Gates’ alleged association with Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, which may have contributed to the split.
Despite the end of their marriage, the Gateses continue to be recognized globally not only for their roles in building Microsoft but also for their extensive philanthropic work through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
