The ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran has reached a critical juncture, significantly impacting geopolitical alignments in the Gulf region. The seven-week-long escalation has not only heightened regional instability but also led to growing dissatisfaction among US allies over Washington’s ability to ensure security in the region.
The United Arab Emirates, which initially extended strong support to US-led positions during the early phase of the conflict, is now reassessing its security reliance on Washington. Concerns have intensified following reported Iranian missile threats, which exposed vulnerabilities in protecting major urban centres such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi, raising questions over the effectiveness of existing defence arrangements.
UAE political analyst Abdulkhaleq Abdulla, in remarks reported by Reuters, stated that the country no longer sees the need for heavy reliance on the United States for security. He described US military bases in the UAE as “a burden rather than a strategic asset,” signalling a potential shift in the country’s long-term defence outlook.
Saudi Arabia has also expressed similar concerns regarding US security commitments. Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan questioned the reliability of American protection, stating that a nation unable to safeguard its own military installations cannot be expected to protect others. The economic impact of damage to oil infrastructure and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz has further deepened Riyadh’s concerns.
Overall, the prolonged Iran–US conflict has strained not only bilateral relations but also the trust between Washington and its Gulf partners. With rising security threats and disruptions to key maritime routes, Gulf nations are reportedly exploring alternative defence strategies, potentially signalling a major shift in regional security dynamics.
