Egypt Unveils “Octagon”: World’s Largest Military Headquarters, Dwarfing the Pentagon

Egypt’s defence sector has opened a new chapter with the construction of the “Octagon” (State Strategic Command Headquarters), setting a new record as the world’s largest and most advanced military headquarters. The structure has surpassed the Pentagon in the United States, which had until now been recognised as the largest defence building in the world. This massive defence city complex has been built across approximately 22,000 acres within the new administrative capital being developed east of Cairo, Egypt’s capital. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi officially inaugurated the structure and hoisted the flag of the armed forces. Notably, this marked the first time in the past decade that he attended such an event in military uniform.

The Octagon is not a single building, but a complex of 10 massive structures arranged in an octagonal shape. Eight octagonal buildings form the outer ring, while two main central ministry buildings sit at the centre. The complex offers more than 50.5 million square feet of floor space in total. It has been designed to blend the style of ancient Egyptian structures such as Thebes and the Karnak temples, featuring massive stone columns, with elements of Greco-Roman architecture, standing as a symbol combining ancient culture with modern defence technology.

The Pentagon in Virginia, USA, is a single five-sided building, with its entire campus spanning between 29 and 41 acres. Egypt’s Octagon, by contrast, spans a massive 22,000 acres — roughly 750 times the size of the Pentagon in terms of area. While the Pentagon houses the primary operations of the US Department of Defense, the Octagon brings together all of Egypt’s defence branches — including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Air Defence — under a single location.

The Octagon has been designed not merely as a military office but as a strategic hub. The command network has been built so that national defence, military strategy, intelligence operations, secure communications, and emergency crisis management all function together under one umbrella. It has been constructed with artificial intelligence systems, cybersecurity bunkers, underground data centres, and modern infrastructure.

The massive complex is designed to be fully self-sufficient. Along with the main army divisions, it also houses military academies, residential complexes for officers, modern hospitals, helipads, training grounds, and tightly secured perimeters. Infrastructure has been put in place to ensure that, in the event of war or national emergencies, the country’s governance and military decision-making can continue uninterrupted from this very location.
