Debt Crisis Deepens In US: One In Five Households Struggling To Repay Loans, Federal Reserve Survey Reveals

The United States is facing a deepening financial crisis, with runaway inflation, soaring prices of essential goods and a growing debt burden severely affecting the lives of ordinary families. According to a recent report released by the Federal Reserve, the US central bank, Americans’ ability to repay their loan instalments has fallen sharply over the past three years.

The Federal Reserve conducted a wide-ranging survey of household finances between 2022 and 2025. The share of households struggling to pay loan instalments stood at 12 percent in 2022 and rose to 20 percent by 2025, meaning one in five families is not repaying its debts on time. More than 8 percent of households were unable to pay even a single EMI for two months or longer. This is reportedly the first crisis of such scale since the severe economic downturn of 2010.

The primary driver is unchecked inflation. Prices of essentials, house rents, healthcare, education and fuel have risen sharply, and with incomes failing to keep pace, much of a typical salary now goes towards rent and necessities alone. Many families have increased their reliance on credit cards and personal loans for electricity bills, groceries and medical needs. As the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to curb inflation, credit card and loan interest rates soared, trapping many in a cycle of borrowing to repay old debts or paying only interest while the principal remains untouched.

Rising car prices and higher interest on vehicle loans have added to the strain, while home loan borrowers are paying heavy monthly EMIs due to increased interest burdens. With more than half of monthly income often going towards housing and car EMIs alone, many are left without cash for emergencies and are turning into loan defaulters. Economists have warned that conditions similar to the 2010 financial crisis could emerge once again.
