Vijayawada: Veteran actor and Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna expressed concern over the challenges currently being faced by the Telugu film industry, particularly by exhibitors and theatre owners. He made the remarks while addressing the oath-taking ceremony of the newly appointed chairman and board members of the Andhra Pradesh Film Development Corporation (APFDC) in Vijayawada.

Speaking at the event, Balakrishna said cinema theatres across the Telugu states are going through a difficult phase due to irregular film releases. He stressed that theatres can survive and function successfully only when movies are released consistently without long gaps. According to him, the slowdown in film releases is severely affecting the exhibition sector and theatre business.

The actor-politician recalled that filmmakers in earlier decades used to complete movies in a much shorter time despite limited technology. However, he observed that even with advanced filmmaking technology available today, movie production is taking considerably longer. This delay, he said, is resulting in fewer films reaching theatres and creating operational challenges for exhibitors.

Balakrishna also highlighted the importance of Andhra Pradesh to the Telugu film industry, stating that nearly 65 to 70 percent of Telugu cinema collections come from the state. He praised Andhra audiences for their continued support toward Telugu films and described them as a major pillar of the industry’s success.

He further stated that the Andhra Pradesh government is prepared to extend complete support to the film industry and expressed hope that the Telangana government would also cooperate in promoting Telugu cinema. Balakrishna said coordinated efforts by both Telugu states would help the industry grow further and overcome its current challenges.

During his speech, Balakrishna also emphasized the need to revive the prestigious Nandi Awards, which have remained discontinued for several years. Calling them one of the highest honours for Telugu film artists, he said the newly formed APFDC board would take steps to restore the awards. His announcement has generated positive reactions within film circles, with many artists and fans welcoming the possibility of the Nandi Awards making a comeback.
