Assam Police arrested a man in Morigaon district for posting threats on social media against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, warning to kill him. Along with the main accused, police have also taken into custody his father, brother, and two others in connection with the case.
On Friday, during Independence Day celebrations, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s speech at Khanapara in Guwahati was being live-streamed on social media. In the comment section of that live stream, a man identified as Abdul Muta posted a threatening comment stating that he would kill the Chief Minister if paid ₹1 crore, and that anyone willing to pay should contact him.
The comment did not stop at threatening the Chief Minister — it also included slogans supporting Pakistan and opposing India, including “Pakistan Zindabad.” Taking serious note of this, Boragaon police launched an investigation based on the social media account used to post the comment. They traced the mobile number linked to the comment to a tailor by profession named Abdul Mutalib, and took him into custody the same night.
Police are now collecting digital evidence to determine whether Mutalib posted the threatening comment himself or whether his account was misused by someone else. On suspicion of their involvement in the case, police have also taken Mutalib’s father, brother, and one other person into custody and are questioning them in depth.
The threatening comment appeared even as the Chief Minister was speaking about the state’s development and future plans in his Independence Day address, causing widespread alarm. Assam Police have since intensified their investigation into the incident.
