WASHINGTON: Americans vote today in midterm elections widely seen as a referendum on President Donald Trump’s governance and decisions. Republicans hold majorities in both chambers of Congress, but pre-election surveys favor the opposition Democrats, and the outcome could pose a significant challenge to Trump’s authority for the next two years.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are on the ballot, along with 35 seats in the 100-member Senate. Voters are also electing governors in 36 states and numerous state and local legislators. House members serve two-year terms, and one-third of the Senate’s six-year seats come up every two years, which makes midterms pivotal for shifts in power.
What a Democratic Win Would Mean
A loss of congressional control would not remove Trump from office, but legislative power rests with Congress. If Democrats win the House, they could restrict new legislation, budget allocations and government spending proposed by the administration. They would also gain the authority to set up investigative committees to examine the government’s performance and the president’s key decisions. A Democratic majority in the Senate as well would allow the party to block the confirmation of federal judges and senior officials.
Issues Driving the Vote
The economy, inflation, health care and border immigration dominate the campaign. Pre-election voter analyses show 84 percent of voters prioritizing economic concerns such as inflation and jobs, 68 percent citing health care, and 59 percent focusing on illegal immigration and border security. Trump’s hardline immigration policies and import tariffs have drawn criticism during the campaign.
Impact on Indians
The results could directly affect the millions of Indians in the US, including IT professionals on H-1B visas. Republicans have pushed to tighten immigration policy and H-1B rules, and a stronger Democratic presence in Congress could check those efforts. Political analysts say a Democratic victory could improve conditions on visa issuance, green card waiting times and job security for Indian nationals.
Record Spending
The midterms are the most expensive in American history, with parties and groups spending more than $11.6 billion on advertising and campaign activity. Prominent business figures, including Tesla chief Elon Musk, are reported to have contributed hundreds of millions of dollars in support of Republican candidates.
