WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has appointed Stephen Miller, the architect of his immigration policies and one of his most trusted advisers, as White House chief of staff. Current Chief of Staff Susie Wiles has been moved to the president’s political operation. Trump announced the change on his social media platform, Truth Social, saying it takes effect Monday, November 9.

“I am pleased to announce that Stephen Miller, currently Deputy Chief of Staff and one of my most trusted advisers, will take over as White House Chief of Staff from November 9,” Trump said. “Susie Wiles, who has done a tremendous job so far, will now work in the Trump political operation. Thank you for her service as Chief of Staff,” he added. He did not specify what responsibilities Wiles will take on.

The appointment drew mixed reactions. Members of Trump’s Cabinet and Republican leaders welcomed it, while Democrats strongly opposed it.

California Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla alleged that Trump made the move to enforce his hardline immigration policies with redoubled vigor. “Trump is escalating, and so will we,” he warned. “We will use every power we have, including investigations, hearings and subpoenas, to expose this administration’s abuse of power.” Padilla alleged that Miller was behind policies such as separating families and raiding immigrants.

Vice President JD Vance welcomed the appointment, saying, “Stephen Miller is a wonderful patriot. He will do great things.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio and FBI Director Kash Patel also backed Miller. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said Miller has long been a staunch supporter of Trump’s agenda and that the administration would achieve more historic victories under his leadership.

Miller has played a key role in both of Trump’s terms. His work on immigration and domestic affairs has made him a prominent figure and drawn sharp criticism from Democrats. Wiles led Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and made history as the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff.
