Washington: President Donald Trump suffered a major setback in the US midterm elections as the Democratic Party secured a decisive victory in both chambers of Congress. Democrats are now preparing for a deep investigation into the Trump administration.
According to election surveys, nearly 50 percent of voters named government corruption as their top concern, followed by the economy and the protection of democracy.
Against this backdrop, House Oversight Committee chief Robert Garcia warned Trump’s legal team that investigations into five key areas will begin soon. These include the Trump family’s businesses and the role of family members in mineral deals; ICE raids and alleged human rights violations; banking transactions linked to the Epstein files; the functioning of DOGE; and the White House ballroom construction, crypto deals and real estate projects.
Hakeem Jeffries, who is in the race for Speaker, has proposed bringing a third impeachment resolution against Trump if necessary. Democrats, who have criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for mishandling the military confrontation with Iran, are also preparing to probe civilian casualties, ammunition shortages, misuse of the defense budget and anti-drug operations in the Caribbean.
Reacting to the results, the White House posted a “Never Surrender” message alongside Trump’s photo. Trump acknowledged that the Iran war had pushed up oil prices and fueled public discontent, but said the main goal is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and that he will not back down even at a political cost.
With a simple majority in the House, Democrats could pass an impeachment resolution. However, removing Trump from office in the Senate would require a two-thirds majority, and Washington politics is set to heat up further in the coming days.
