Donald Trump Jr., son of US President Donald Trump, strongly opposes a military confrontation with Iran, according to a report published by The Atlantic magazine. The report says he has shared his views directly with his father, lending weight to claims that differences of opinion exist even within pro-Trump circles.
Two people who spoke with Trump Jr. confirmed the account, saying he has opposed war with Iran from the outset and believes it is unnecessary for the United States to be drawn into another war in the Middle East. A person very close to him said he kept these views private as he did not wish to disagree publicly with his father. His spokesperson declined to comment on the report, and the White House did not respond directly.
His private stance does not match his public remarks. In April 2024, when Iran attacked Israel with missiles and drones, Trump Jr. posted on X, asking whether those who had said Trump would bring a full-scale war with Iran now realised how badly a strong leader like Trump was needed.
Differences over war with Iran also exist within the MAGA movement. The late Charlie Kirk, a close associate of Trump Jr., had openly opposed military intervention. Senior officials including Vice President JD Vance, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly expressed internal doubts about the war strategy initially.
Meanwhile, a survey released by the Pew Research Center on October 4, 2026 found that 65 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the Iran crisis, while only 33 percent support it. Support among Republicans has fallen to 63 percent, and nearly half of Americans believe the war will continue for over a year. The report, written by Vivian Salama and Ashley Parker, has become a major talking point in political circles.
