Washington: US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States would soon emerge victorious in its ongoing conflict with Iran, asserting that inflation would ease completely and petrol prices would fall sharply once the war ends.
Addressing reporters at the White House, Trump said American officials were engaged in talks with mediators to bring the conflict to a close, though he withheld details of the discussions. “We are going to win. We will achieve victory one way or another. This is going to end very soon,” he said. Asked whether the US could launch further strikes on Iran ahead of the November midterm elections, Trump said such a possibility remains open.
He maintained that inflation in the US would fall completely once the war concludes, with petrol prices also expected to drop sharply. However, concerns over oil supply linked to the conflict continued to weigh on markets, with international crude prices rising again on Tuesday.
Trump defended the US military action against Iran, saying it had helped avert a major threat to global security. He argued that had the US not intervened, Israel would have faced serious danger, which could subsequently have escalated into missile and bomb threats extending to the US and Europe.
Separately, indirect talks between Washington and Tehran aimed at ending the conflict are reportedly underway under Qatari mediation, with officials from both sides holding separate rounds of discussions said to cover a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. No clarity has emerged yet on a final agreement. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is also expected to hold talks with Qatari mediators.
Iranian state media said further talks with the United States have not yet been finalised. Trump, meanwhile, denied reports suggesting he was prepared to offer Iran partial sanctions relief and release frozen funds in exchange for nuclear-related assurances, describing the reports as untrue and stating via social media that he had made no such proposal.
