The escalating dispute between the United States and Iran is causing deep concern among nations worldwide. Sharp remarks by US President Donald Trump, followed by a firm response from Tehran, have raised fears that war could break out again. What began as a war of words now appears to be edging toward direct confrontation. At the center of the crisis is the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway vital to global trade and, in particular, to energy transport.
A major share of the world’s oil shipments passes through the strait. Several international proposals have been put forward to ease tensions along the corridor and safely restore ship movements, but Trump rejected those peace proposals outright. The decision has angered Iran, which accuses Washington of acting in ways that undermine its regional interests.
Tehran responded sharply to the US stance. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that Iran is fully prepared for a “final war” with the United States at any moment. He said Iran will not hesitate to make any sacrifice or wage any fight to defend its sovereignty, national security and the interests of its people, and stressed that the country will not bow to pressure or threats from Washington, however severe.
The mounting war-like atmosphere between the two countries threatens not only West Asia but the world at large. Millions of barrels of oil pass through the Strait of Hormuz every day. If war breaks out in the area and shipping comes to a halt, a global oil shortage could follow, sending prices soaring. Economists warn that this would have a severe adverse impact on economies worldwide, particularly in developing countries such as India.
