A bizarre dispute involving a barbecue, a tenant, a landlord, and eventually the police has gone viral worldwide, originating from Surrey in British Columbia, Canada. A total of four videos have surfaced documenting how the quarrel escalated. The dispute began when a 50-year-old tenant set up a barbecue outside the house he was renting and was grilling steak, at which point Raj Tiwana, the landlady of Indian origin, arrived at the scene and stopped the barbecue — a confrontation that was captured on camera in what followed.

The first video shows only the beginning of the dispute, with the tenant explaining that he had invited friends over for dinner. The disagreement, however, did not end there. In the second video, the tenant states that his friends had come over for dinner and alleges that the homeowner was ruining their party mood, but the argument continues unabated, with neither side appearing willing to back down. The dispute escalates further in the third video, in which the tenant, recording the entire exchange on his phone from inside his apartment, is confronted again by Raj Tiwana in a heated argument during which she appears to attempt to hit him, while he continues recording without stopping. In the fourth video, the confrontation shifts entirely, with Surrey police entering the scene and taking Raj Tiwana into custody — a development that pushed the story to another level entirely. What began as a dispute over nothing more than a barbecue ultimately culminated in police arresting the homeowner, though the central story begins from this point onward.

Under British Columbia law, a property owner is not permitted to exercise unlimited authority over a tenant merely by virtue of ownership. Under the province’s Residential Tenancy Act, a tenant is entitled to privacy, freedom, and full rights over the dwelling. Furthermore, a landlord cannot enter a tenant’s home at will — written notice must be provided at least 24 hours in advance, and entry is permitted only between 8 AM and 9 PM, and only for valid reasons.

Another significant provision applies here as well: under British Columbia’s regulations, a landlord cannot prevent a tenant from inviting guests into the home. This, therefore, is not simply a question of ownership, but one concerning the precise rights a tenant retains once a property has been rented out — which is why these videos generated such a sensation on social media. If the tenant’s allegations are accurate, this is not merely a minor dispute over a barbecue, but one that raises significant questions regarding privacy, the right of entry into a home, threats, and the limits of a landlord’s authority. Additional allegations have also circulated online, including claims that the locks were changed and the power supply cut off; however, these remain, at this stage, allegations from the tenant’s side alone, none of which have been officially confirmed by police, and the landlady’s full account of events is not available either. As such, a definitive judgment on who is right and who is wrong cannot be drawn from a viral video alone.

What can be stated clearly, however, is that property ownership alone does not confer the authority to dictate a tenant’s personal life. A landlord holds certain rights, but a tenant holds rights as well, and in Canada, those rights carry legal protection. This is what makes the case particularly significant — the question at hand is no longer simply who was at fault over the barbecue, but rather where a landlord’s authority ends and a tenant’s right to privacy begins. What began as a dispute over a barbecue, captured across four videos showing its escalation, eventually drew police intervention. The central question now is not what occurred in front of the camera, but what transpired before the camera was switched on — and what the law has to say about it.
