In a major technical milestone, over 16,500 scientists, engineers, and personnel at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-05) aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. The mission marks a significant operational recovery for the agency following launch setbacks experienced by its flagship PSLV fleet in 2025 and early 2026, which necessitated a transition to the heavy-lift GSLV Mk II launch vehicle.

Weighing over 2,300 kilograms, the EOS-05 satellite was injected into a Geosynchronous Orbit located approximately 36,000 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. At this altitude, the satellite’s orbital period matches the Earth’s 24-hour rotational period, allowing it to maintain a fixed position over the region. Unlike standard Low Earth Orbit (LEO) observation satellites that circle at altitudes between 500 and 800 kilometers and only scan a given area once or twice daily, EOS-05 operates as a stationary observation platform capable of continuous, round-the-clock monitoring of the Indian subcontinent and its surrounding maritime domains.

Equipped with advanced multi-spectral camera payloads, the satellite provides real-time data feeds for critical national applications. In defense and security, the system monitors border regions and territorial waters to deliver immediate alerts regarding troop and naval movements. Additionally, the satellite enhances disaster management by providing continuous tracking of cyclone trajectories, flood progression, and forest fire expansion, enabling authorities to issue early warnings and execute timely evacuations.

The EOS-05 payload is also built to penetrate cloud cover and operate during night hours, gathering detailed agricultural data to assess crop health, forecast yields, and evaluate drought conditions across the country. With this successful indigenous deployment via the GSLV platform, India joins an elite group of spacefaring nations possessing geostationary, high-resolution continuous Earth observation capabilities.
