The month-long student movement in Jharkhand has intensified further. Students are protesting, demanding an inquiry into irregularities in government job recruitment exams, cancellation of the earlier exam, and the resignation of Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Alleging that the JMM-Congress alliance “has failed to take concrete action” on their demands, students burned effigies of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav in Ranchi, sparking heightened tensions. Despite this, the Soren-led government invited protesters for another round of talks on Monday (August 17). However, unsatisfied, the students have called for a siege of the Chief Minister’s residence on the 20th of this month.

Torch Rally

Organized under the banner of the “JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch,” these protests entered their 24th day on Monday, with students reiterating their demand for a CBI investigation into the irregularities and the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL examination. During this, students staged a torch rally from Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium to Albert Ekka Chowk, where the burning of effigies of Rahul Gandhi and CM Soren caused an uproar. This effigy-burning subsequently spread to various districts across Jharkhand, where students similarly staged protests against the government and burned effigies.

Invitation for Fresh Talks

Amid rising tensions in the state, the Jharkhand government invited representatives of the protesters for talks on Monday. The invitation for discussions came following a meeting between protesters, the sub-divisional officer, and the additional district magistrate (law and order) at Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium. An official involved stated that students were invited to participate in the talks along with their legal advisor. The “JPSC-JSSC Reforms Manch” accepted the government’s proposal for discussions at the State Guest House. However, they made clear that agreeing to talks did not mean they would back down on their demands. “Since we want to resolve this issue through dialogue, we will certainly go for talks. We remain firm on our two demands — a CBI investigation into the irregularities in the recruitment exams, and the cancellation of the JSSC-CGL exam,” student leader Ravindra Paswan told the media.

Call to Besiege CM’s Residence

Despite being invited for talks, protesters announced that they would besiege the Chief Minister’s residence on August 20. They called on students from across Jharkhand to gather in Ranchi to discuss this plan. Speaking on the occasion, Paswan alleged, “Since both the JMM and Congress are playing politics with us, we are demanding the CM’s resignation.” It also caused a stir when protesters demanded that, if the Chief Minister fails to act on their agitation, Congress should withdraw its support from the JMM-led government.

“Talk to the Students,” Says Rahul Gandhi

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, responded to the issue of students protesting over irregularities in Jharkhand’s government job recruitment exams. He urged Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren to personally meet the protesting students and resolve their grievances, writing a letter to Soren to this effect. Notably, in his letter, Rahul Gandhi stated that the student protest has remained peaceful so far and that their demands are just.

“Congress has extended its support to the protests being carried out by students across the country over the past several months against question paper leaks and irregularities in the education system. To prevent the situation in Jharkhand from escalating further, the Chief Minister must personally meet the students and hear their grievances. The government must come forward to resolve the agitation through dialogue,” Rahul urged in his letter.
