US President Donald Trump has recently found himself dogged by a string of security scares — armed individuals on one hand, and dangerous incidents on the other. In the latest episode, a major accident was narrowly averted when Marine One, the helicopter carrying Trump, came dangerously close to a passenger aircraft, causing considerable alarm given that the President was aboard one aircraft while the other was carrying passengers.
The incident occurred in the airspace over the US capital, with the helicopter and the aircraft closing to within less than a mile of each other. It reportedly took place on August 4, US time. Officials determined that the near-miss occurred due to a communication lapse with air traffic control personnel. An air traffic controller who noticed that the separation between the two aircraft had fallen well below the required minimum immediately alerted the pilots, averting what could have been a major accident. Officials noted that aviation regulations require a minimum separation of at least a mile and a half between two aircraft.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have both launched immediate investigations into the incident. The FAA stated that it would review the matter and take appropriate action. The White House also responded to the incident, stating that Marine One helicopters are flown by highly skilled, trained pilots and confirming that President Trump was not endangered in the incident. Trump was en route to California at the time.
Armed Man Detained Near Golf Course Ahead of Trump’s Los Angeles Visit
Separately, prior to President Trump’s visit to Los Angeles, a security scare reportedly unfolded near a local National Golf Course. Authorities had put security arrangements in place ahead of Trump’s planned visit to the venue for a fundraising event, when a man was spotted moving suspiciously nearby. He was taken into custody by police after he was seen taking photographs and videos on the premises. A subsequent search revealed a firearm and ammunition in his car, following which he was immediately arrested and explosive materials were seized.
Authorities identified the accused as 38-year-old Jeanine John Talley of Downey. A subsequent search of his home turned up a large cache of firearms, magazines, and ammunition. Investigators are now looking into his intent in coming to the golf course, and are also examining whether the incident could be linked to any extremist plot. Trump has faced multiple assassination attempts in the past, and this latest episode involving an armed individual has once again raised alarm.
