Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran are causing deep concern for the global economy. With crude oil prices already soaring, fresh developments have now unfolded in the Red Sea. Houthi rebels, who act in support of Iran, have launched missile attacks on two major Saudi Arabian oil tankers traveling through the Red Sea. US President Donald Trump reacted sharply to the attacks, stating clearly that the Iranian government must bear full responsibility for the strikes carried out by the Houthis.
Trump strongly criticized the Houthi rebels, saying they were carrying out this destruction at Iran’s bidding. He noted that when the Houthis previously attacked commercial vessels, American forces had delivered a firm response, following which the group had refrained from further attacks for some time. He said it was wrong for them to resume such attacks now, warning that if such actions are repeated, the United States would take direct and strong military action against Iran, and that Tehran would have to pay a heavy price for it.
Meanwhile, the Houthi rebels openly declared that they targeted these oil tankers in retaliation for the strikes carried out by American forces against Iran on July 12 this year. This has emerged as a clear sign that tensions in the region are set to escalate further. With this Houthi announcement, maritime traffic through the Red Sea has become even more perilous.
The US Central Command stated that American forces are working intensively to protect maritime transport through the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea routes, both of which are critical to international trade. It said that Iran is attempting to intimidate commercial vessels and sailors in an effort to shut down these maritime routes, and that countering these efforts remains their primary objective. US military officials stated that they would take steps to fully reassert control over the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring that oil transport as well as the movement of other international vessels proceeds without any obstruction.
