A tragic incident marred the world-famous Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra on Thursday, after a massive surge of devotees at Grand Road triggered a stampede-like situation, leaving one person dead and nearly 120 others struggling to breathe amid the overwhelming crowd.

According to reports, emergency response teams reacted swiftly upon receiving information about the crisis, rescuing the affected devotees and shifting them to Puri Medical Hospital for treatment. One individual, who had lost consciousness due to breathing difficulties, was rushed to Puri District Headquarters Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had already died. Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the fatality.

A special rescue unit was deployed to bring the situation under control, safely evacuating devotees from the congested stretch of Grand Road. In the aftermath, authorities have tightened crowd-management measures along the route to prevent a recurrence of such incidents during the remainder of the festivities.

Despite the disruption, the annual pilgrimage proceeded in grand style, with lakhs of devotees converging on Puri to witness the chariots’ journey from the 12th-century Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple. The yatra began amid a festive atmosphere of drum beats, conch shells, and the ringing of bronze cymbals, marking the start of one of Hinduism’s most revered religious observances.

The proceedings opened with the ceremonial installation of Lord Sudarshan, brought out from the temple’s sanctum, onto Darpadalana, the chariot dedicated to Goddess Subhadra, setting the stage for the larger procession of the deities that follows.
