An online threat to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his upcoming visit to Australia has caused a stir. The incident occurred just days before he is set to attend a major public event in Melbourne, prompting Australian security agencies to go on alert. Authorities there have also launched an investigation into the matter.
A large gathering of the Indian diaspora, titled “Melbourne Meets Modi,” is scheduled to be held at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne next Wednesday, July 9. Under a Facebook post promoting the event, a comment was posted from an account named Abu Mustafa, stating that it would be better to keep the stadium roof closed during the event — or else he would be coming to Australia only to die.
Massive Security Arrangements
In view of this threat, the Australian government is putting in place extremely tight security for PM Modi’s visit. Australian Federal Police, state police, and officials from special protection units are jointly overseeing the security arrangements. Typically, when such threats are made against heads of state of other nations, local laws treat the matter with the highest priority in tracking down the accused. During this visit, PM Modi is set to hold bilateral talks with Australian officials, besides addressing the large gathering of the Indian community expected at Marvel Stadium. The investigation into the threat is currently progressing rapidly.
