Russia’s nuclear-powered battlecruiser Admiral Nakhimov is nearing a return to active service after spending nearly three decades out of operation. The Kirov-class warship, one of the largest and most powerful surface combatants ever built, has entered the final phase of sea trials following an extensive modernization program that kept it in dry dock for approximately 27 years.
According to reports, the ongoing trials are aimed at evaluating the vessel’s upgraded combat systems, advanced radar capabilities, and overall operational readiness. Originally commissioned during the Soviet era, Admiral Nakhimov was once considered among the world’s most formidable naval warships. Russia has now overhauled the cruiser with modern weapons and cutting-edge technology to significantly enhance its combat effectiveness.
The upgraded vessel is expected to carry some of Russia’s most advanced missile systems, including Zircon hypersonic missiles, Oniks anti-ship missiles, and Kalibr cruise missiles. Defense experts believe the addition of these weapons could substantially boost Russia’s maritime strike capabilities and strengthen its strategic position, particularly in the Arctic region.
Military analysts say the warship’s eventual deployment could present a new challenge for NATO nations along the alliance’s northern frontier, potentially altering regional security dynamics. However, despite the progress made during modernization, the vessel is still undergoing technical evaluations and final preparations. As a result, experts do not expect Admiral Nakhimov to achieve full operational readiness before 2027.
The development comes as Russia continues efforts to modernize its naval forces and expand its military presence in the Arctic, even as international attention remains focused on the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
