Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday announced a series of key policy decisions during a high-level cabinet review meeting, focusing on farmer welfare, the film industry, interstate water disputes, and women’s safety. The decisions are being viewed as significant administrative measures aimed at addressing both economic and social concerns in the state.

In a major relief for farmers, the state government announced a crop loan waiver scheme for loans availed through cooperative banks. Under the scheme, farmers who borrowed up to ₹50,000 will receive a complete waiver, while those with loans exceeding ₹50,000 will be eligible for a 50 percent waiver. The government stated that the benefit would apply only to crop loans taken between May 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026. Officials estimate that around 14.22 lakh farmers across Tamil Nadu will benefit from the scheme, which is expected to place an additional financial burden of ₹2,044 crore on the state exchequer.

The Chief Minister also announced a major relaxation for the Tamil film industry by permitting five shows per day for all Tamil films during the first week of release. Under the revised policy, theatre owners, producers, and distributors will no longer require prior government approval to screen an additional “fifth show.” The move is expected to provide operational flexibility and financial relief to exhibitors and producers.

On the interstate water dispute front, Vijay chaired a detailed review meeting on Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu project on the Cauvery River. Reiterating Tamil Nadu’s opposition to the project, the government expressed concerns that the development could impact the state’s share of Cauvery water and adversely affect farmers. Officials briefed the Chief Minister on the current legal status of the dispute, following recent developments related to the project in Karnataka. Vijay directed authorities to expedite legal measures after reviewing judicial observations and conducting further consultations.

The Chief Minister also welcomed the verdict delivered by a special POCSO Court in the sexual assault and murder case of a Class 12 student from Vilathikulam. The court awarded a double death sentence to the accused, Dharm Muneeswaran. Vijay described the swift completion of the trial and the delivery of justice within three months as a significant achievement and reiterated his government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and protection of women and children across the state.
