The Russia–Ukraine war, which has been ongoing for the past four years, may be approaching a crucial turning point, according to recent remarks made by Russian President Vladimir Putin. His comments have sparked renewed discussions over the possibility of a diplomatic breakthrough between the two nations.
Speaking during Russia’s “Victory Day” celebrations in Moscow, President Putin stated that the conflict in Ukraine is nearing its concluding phase. While indicating that Russia could be open to peace negotiations, he did not specify any timeline for ending the war or reveal details of a potential peace agreement framework.
Putin also emphasized that a peace deal should be finalized before any direct meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. His statement came shortly after reports that, with mediation efforts linked to former U.S. President Donald Trump, Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a temporary three-day ceasefire. Trump, meanwhile, has also stated that discussions are underway to end the ongoing conflict.
Amid heightened security concerns, Russia conducted its Victory Day parade under strict precautionary measures, fearing possible aerial threats from Ukraine. Notably, no heavy weaponry was displayed during the parade at Moscow’s Red Square, with advanced missiles, drones, and fighter jets showcased only on digital screens.
The parade also featured participation from North Korean troops, reflecting their continued support for Russia in the conflict. The war, which began in February 2022, has claimed thousands of lives, including civilians and military personnel. Despite multiple rounds of peace talks in the past, no lasting agreement has been reached, making Putin’s latest remarks significant in the current geopolitical context.
