Amid heightened tensions in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping corridor, piracy incidents have resurfaced off the Horn of Africa. The hijacking of the oil tanker Honour 25 off the Somali coast has raised serious concerns over maritime security and the safety of international energy supply routes.

According to reports, the incident took place when the tanker was sailing approximately 30 nautical miles off the Somali coast. Initially, six armed pirates boarded the vessel from a small boat during the night, followed by five more attackers who later joined them, successfully taking control of the ship. The vessel is currently reported to be anchored between the Xaafun and Bandar Bela regions in Somalia.

The tanker was carrying 17 crew members from multiple countries, including 10 Pakistanis, 4 Indonesians, 1 Indian, 1 Sri Lankan, and 1 Myanmar national. The vessel was transporting around 18,500 barrels of crude oil and was en route to Mogadishu when it was hijacked. The ship had also recently been operating near the Strait of Hormuz, where regional geopolitical tensions have already disrupted maritime activity.

Security experts note that piracy off Somalia had declined significantly in recent years, but recent developments suggest a resurgence. Analysts attribute this to the diversion of global naval resources toward volatile regions such as the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, creating operational gaps that are being exploited by pirate groups.

Pakistan has responded strongly to the incident, with Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry seeking a detailed report and directing swift rescue efforts. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry is coordinating with international agencies, while India is closely monitoring the situation due to the presence of one Indian crew member onboard. Global efforts are underway to ensure the safe release of all hostages, as the incident highlights growing vulnerabilities in international maritime security amid escalating geopolitical tensions.
