Amid rising tensions in West Asia, a powerful weapon in Iran’s arsenal has drawn global attention — the Karrar UAV. Unlike conventional surveillance drones, the Karrar is a jet-powered unmanned system capable of operating as a bomber as well as a suicide attack platform. Military observers say the drone has become a growing concern for the United States and Israel amid the ongoing regional conflict.
The Karrar UAV was first unveiled in 2010 and was developed using Iran’s indigenous technology. Unlike typical drones that fly slowly using propellers, the Karrar is equipped with a turbojet engine similar to those used in fighter aircraft. This allows the drone to travel at very high speeds and strike targets quickly. Reports suggest it can reach speeds of up to 900 kilometers per hour, while its design also helps it evade enemy radar systems.
The drone generally has an operational range of around 1,000 kilometers, enabling it to strike deep inside enemy territory. In suicide missions, however, the UAV does not need to return to base, allowing it to travel even farther to hit its target. Another advantage is that the system does not require a conventional runway for launch. It can be deployed from desert locations or even from mobile platforms such as trucks using a rocket booster.
In addition to strike missions, the Karrar UAV has also been upgraded with the Majid missile, an air-to-air missile system. This upgrade allows the drone to target aerial threats such as drones or helicopters in mid-air. Analysts say the integration of such capabilities could significantly expand Iran’s drone warfare strategy and influence the dynamics of future conflicts in the region.
