Reports indicate that Iran has imported nearly 900,000 air-filled decoy fighter jets, tanks, missile launchers, and aircraft from China. These decoys are designed to appear identical to real military hardware on satellite and radar surveillance. Iran has safely stored its actual fighter jets in underground bunkers while positioning the decoys on airstrips, creating a convincing illusion of military strength.
The economic impact on the U.S. has been significant. Each Patriot missile costs between $200,000 and $500,000 (roughly ₹1.6–4 crore), while the decoys cost only a few thousand rupees to produce. When missiles strike, they destroy only empty decoys, wasting resources and giving Iran a strategic advantage. Defense analysts also note that some decoys incorporate AI-enhanced visuals and thermal heaters to mimic engine heat, further misleading missile guidance systems.
